Midnight Shore
Oriental powdered ink on metallic rice paper, 18" x 24"
Using iridescent powdered pigments, Maria Di Russo weds darkness with
glistening brilliance in
Midnight Shore. The precise balance between
abstraction and representation allows the viewer to be drawn into the
act of visually constructing a seascape. Momentum erupts with the
implied movement of waves and yet there remains a backdrop of
stillness created by the regions of black and grey. The dynamic
waterline contrasts with other more simply defined boundaries. An
image of duality—abstraction and representation—movement and
stillness—darkness and glistening light—
Midnight Shore creates ongoing
interest and intrigue that develops with prolonged consideration. This
image typifies the visual strength characteristic of Maria Di Russo’s
work.
