If a painting can be viewed as a poem, Hernan Miranda can be viewed as a poet.
While his manipulated arrangement and depiction of common objects compels one to wonder if his works are photographs or true paintings, his hyper-realism calls for contemplation and reflection as he re-introduces to the viewer diverse objects in a way that deceives as well as it entertains.
Hernan is able to portray just beyond the ambiguity of the verisimilitude that tempts one to touch the canvas to verify that the work is indeed two-dimensional. His "bi-realistic" work mixes fantasy and reality with equal form and value. In fact, Miranda's works have been likened to the words of poet
Rafael Alberti and even described as an "untouchable, rythmic, joined exactly in the order of an architect".
This Paraguay native and self-taught artist has evolved from a background in drawing as his first experiences which bears a strong influence on his take on the "Clarooscuro" (bright and obscure) and the tone value scale in his works. In 1987 he won his first award at the "Magister Gallery" in Asuncion, Paraguay.
This internationally-known and award winner artist is strongly influenced by "Tenebristas" painters. Miranda has studied the works of Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Vermeer, as well as Sanchez Cotan, Morandi, and specially Antonio Lopez which has motivated him to go beyond academic virtuosity. He, who considers light as being the main protagonist in his works, seeks visual effect but also visual affection.
As the Paraguayan novelist, Augusto Roa Bastos, puts it,
Hernán Miranda shows us with his works through forms, colors, drawings, volume, and perspectives closed in upon themselves, that the reality perceived by the eyes is multi-faceted.
Miranda, the innovative artist, is working presently to further develop his mixed-media "Bi Realism" series, consisting of the integration of wooden panel, canvas, paper, and other media into his paintings, while preserving the visual asthetics, to marry the real and the virtual.
When not in his studio, one will find the now Florida resident, Hernan Miranda, on the lecture circuit at various art institutions all over the world.
